The LASIK Solution

What Is LASIK and How It Works

LASIK, or Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, is a highly advanced vision correction procedure designed to correct the problems of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and regular astigmatism.

Introduced in the early 1980's, LASIK has evolved into one of the most precise and effective surgical techniques in all of modern medicine.

Using this technology, the surgeons of LaserOne are able to reshape the cornea to reduce and even eliminate dependence on corrective lenses.

To treat nearsightedness (left), the cornea must be flattened. So, the laser is used to remove tissue from the center of the cornea.

To treat farsightedness (right), the central cornea must be steepened. So, the laser is used to remove tissue in a donut formation around the center of the cornea.

To treat astigmatism (left), the cornea must be made more spherical. So, the pattern of the laser beam is altered to remove more tissue on one side of the cornea.

LASIK offers a number of benefits over other methods of laser vision correction because it is performed under a protective layer of corneal tissue. As a result, there is less surface area to heal, less risk of scarring, less risk of corneal haze, and less post-operative discomfort. Your vision stabilizes more rapidly, often within a day or so.

Even with moderate to high levels of refractive errors, most LASIK patients are able to pass a driver's license test without glasses or contact lenses.

  The LASIK Procedure

The actual LASIK surgery takes less than 6 minutes per eye. After your eye has been completely numbed using topical "eye drops" of anesthesia, an eyelid holder is gently placed between your eyelids to keep you from blinking.

Next, an instrument called a microkeratome makes a protective flap in the cornea. During this process, you may feel a little pressure, but no discomfort.

You will be asked to look directly at a
flashing light while the laser reshapes
the cornea. Usually, this takes less
than a minute. Then, the protective flap
is folded back into place where it bonds
securely without the need for stitches.

LaserOne operates two excimer lasers: the VISX Star S4 and the Alcon Ladarvision 4000. These are the most advanced lasers available today.

After the procedure, some patients report a slight discomfort that usually goes away within 12 to 24 hours.
