Conditions of the Eye
Am I a Candidate?
To determine if LASIK is right for you, there are some basic facts you should know about the eye and specific vision conditions (refractive errors) that LASIK is designed to correct.
The Aging Eye and Reading Glasses
Presbyopia
During the natural aging process, you may begin to experience a change in your reading vision. This change, which usually occurs around age 40, is due to the loss of elasticity in the part of the eye known as the lens and its related muscle system. This results in an inability to focus up close and you find yourself needing some type of assistance for reading.
This condition is known as presbyopia.
Monovision
There are several ways your doctor can restore your eyes' ability to focus up close. The most common way is by using some type of corrective lenses. Another alternative to reading glasses is a treatment known as monovision. With monovision, the laser is used to undercorrect one eye for near vision and fully correct the other eye for distance vision.
You will not have to close one eye to read or close one eye to see in the distance. Instead, both eyes remain open and the brain chooses which eye to look through depending on whether the object of your attention is near or far.
You should discuss this option thoroughly with
your surgeon and determine if you would be a good candidate for
monovision.
